CVCC words are words follow specific letter sequences of consonant and vowel sounds.
CVCC words include: ‘p-i-n-k’, ‘m-u-s-t’ and ‘h-e-l-p’. Each of the four sounds need not to be made by only one letter, this can also as well be digraphs and trigraphs. For example, ‘b-e-n-ch’, ‘l-ea-n-t’, p-oi-n-t and ‘ch-o-m-p’.
CVCC words are basically learnt in phase four of the Letters and Sounds Phonics curriculum. In phase four, children as well learn longer words with more consonant sounds than what is briefed, such as CCCVC words (e.g. ‘s-p-l-a-sh’), CCVCC words (e.g. ‘c-r-u-s-t’) and CCCVCC words (e.g. ‘s-c-r-u-n-ch’).
We can help students learn and read CVCC words during targeted reading. Try to identify each sound in sequence and ask the children to name the sounds before ‘putting them together’ so that they can read the whole word.
It may also be helpful to cover one of the letters to make the word shorter, and then add more audio at the end. For example, words such as “leant” can be abbreviated to “depend”.
We can also help children learn to write these words by asking them to ‘speak’ the word. By separating them into individual sounds, and writing each one in sequence they will find it easier to write the whole word.
