ge and dge Sound Phonics Words For Kids

Hello Children,

We are here again to discuss on ge and dge sound phonics words.

If you are teaching this spelling, say:

• When you hear the sound / j / at the end of a magic letter AND it is immediately preceded by a short vowel, written or spelled -dge.

• If there is a group of consonants or vowels before / j /, it is written or spelled -ge.

• J will never come at the end of a word and the dge will never come at the beginning.

There are a few cases where the dge comes to the end of the first letter with a plural form. This is often the case when the second character is an unstructured schwa sound such as budget, cudgel or codger.

Ideally, ge / dge will know best because of its familiarity with similarity to known rules. Be specific when connecting the dots for the students.

Play games where the student not only needs to read, but actually make a choice of spelling between ge or dge. Make a list of words that include words with directed sounds. Have the student spell the word. If they can spell the word correctly, they can roll a die and go through the game board.
