Tier 1,2,3 Vocabulary Words List for Kids

Hello Students

We must understand the three tier system.

So, let us define all the three tier system with the help of few examples.

Words used in everyday speech that children learn through conversation. These words rarely require clear instruction.

Tier 1 Words

Tier I words are basic, everyday words that are part of the vocabulary of many children. These are words that are used daily in conversation, and most of them are learned by listening to family, peers, and teachers using them in their conversations. These words are very important for English language learners who may be unfamiliar with them.

Examples of Tier 1 words include – clock, baby, happy, family, big, small etc.

Tier 2 Vocabulary Words

Tier – 2: High frequency words can come in many forms of text and speech, but younger readers – they may know what they mean.

More precise, Tier 2 words include words that occur frequently from a variety of contexts and topics and play an important role in word processing in a variety of content areas. These are common academic terms and have high application in many different topics and contexts.

Examples of Tier 2 words include – fortunate, maintain, merchant, justify, explain, expand, predict, summarize etc.

Tier 3 Words

Tier – 3: Unusual content – some words are better read in the context in which they are spoken.

More explicit, Tier 3 words are specific domain vocabulary. The words in this category are usually low, special names that appear in specific areas or areas of content. We expect students to become familiar with Tier 3 words. Always suggest teaching these words as there is a need for understanding in specific areas of content.
