Weather Vocabulary Words for Kids

The term “weather” refers to the temporary conditions of the atmosphere, the atmosphere that surrounds the Earth. We tend to think of the weather in terms of the atmosphere in our part of the world. But the weather works like throwing a rock into the water – these bumps eventually touch the water far away from where the rock fell. The same thing happens with the weather all over the world.

The weather is not always the same. It moves, and it changes from hour to hour or day to day.

Six Main Components of Weather

Further to our interests, there are six main components, or parts, of weather. They are temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, and cloudiness.

  • Temperature is measured with a thermometer and refers to how hot or cold the air is, this is the field of Meteorologists.
  • Atmospheric pressure is the weight of the upper atmosphere. Changes in climate change signals in the weather. Meteorologists measure atmospheric pressure in a unit of measure called the atmosphere.
  • Wind is air movement. Wind forms due to differences in temperature and atmospheric pressure between adjacent regions. The winds usually blow from high pressure areas, where it is cold, to areas with low pressure, where it is warm.
  • Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in the air. Moisture is usually expressed as relative humidity, or a high percentage of water vapor can hold at a given temperature.
  • Clouds come in many forms. Not all of them produce rain. Some types of clouds can bring rain or snow. Clouds can affect the amount of sunlight reaching the earth’s surface.
