Asking and Telling Sentences with Examples

Hello everyone!

Do you guys know that there are many types of sentences?

Today, we will get to know more about some of them that are asking (interrogative) and telling (declarative) sentences. So let’s get to the list! ?

What are Telling Sentences ?

A telling sentence, also known as a declarative sentence, is a sentence that gave us information. The information can be about a place, person, animal, things, event, or else.

Telling sentence characteristic

  • The sentence begins with the capital letter.
  • And it ends with a period punctuation (.)

Examples of Telling Sentences

  • My mom is a nurse.
  • Tom is a diligent student.
  • She likes to sing.
  • Megan is my best friend.
  • I was born on 23 October 2004.
  • My uncle lives in a village.

Examples of Asking Sentences

Have you ever read a dialogue in a storybook? Most of the dialogue comes with a two-way conversation. This type of conversation is also affected by the presence of asking that also known as interrogative sentences.

We can easily identify an interrogative sentence by looking at the punctuation that ends the sentence because it always ends with a question mark (?). The asking sentence consists of several types, which also affect the answer that you’ll give. They are:

  1. Yes/no questions

Just like its name, this question needs a yes or no answer only.

Example:

  • Did you have breakfast this morning?
  • Are you going to go to the bookstore at 9 in the morning?
  1. Alternative questions

This type of question gives you at least two choices for the answer so that you can choose from it.

Example:

  • Which one would you buy, a pencil case or a notebook?
  • Would you prefer hot coffee or iced coffee?
  1. Wh-questions

This type of question needs a detailed answer than the yes or no question, so we need to add more description in our response.

Example:

  • What will you do today?
  • When will Mary’s birthday party be held?
  1. Tag questions

The tag question has a different form than the other that we’ve learned before because the tag question starts with a declarative sentence and ends with a mini-question. Usually, we also use this sentence to ask for confirmation.

Example:

  • We will have an English test tomorrow, won’t we?
  • Let’s clean the house, shall we?
