Assamese, actually known as Asamiya is a regional language spoken in the provinces of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
There are many similarities between the Bengali and Assamese languages except for a few differences. This can be proved in the ancient text Charya Pades which is even now claimed by the ancient Assamese and Bengalis.
The Assamese language has also been declared as one of the leading languages of the Indian republic according to the Indian constitution. Although the language was introduced in the seventh century, its literature is as old and early as the 14th century. But history says that Assamese literature existed even before the 14th century for there is an evidence of rich heritage of oral traditions, including folk dances, folk songs, ballads, ceremonial songs, religious songs, and even children’s stories.

There are not many historical records in the history regarding Assamese languages. However there is a related history which narrates that from Magadhi Prakrit the introduction of Assamese and other related languages such as Maithili, Bengali, and Oriya started and emerged.
Magadhi Prakrit later evolved into eastern Aryan languages, including Bengali, Assamese, and Bihari languages, which as well are the source for the Apabhramsa’s dialects in the Brahmaputra region.
