3 Degrees of Adjectives List for Comparison with Examples

Just imagine, riding an automobile. You can choose and go in any speed accordingly. Similarly, adjectives too have different degrees. There are namely three degrees called as Positive, comparative and superlative. Just as degrees of comparison, in general.

1. Positive Degree of Adjectives

DEFINITION

  • Any adjective that is usual or general that describes a noun is said to be positive.

EXAMPLES

  • Food is hot
  • The design is cool

2. Comparative Degree of Adjectives

DEFINITION

  • Any adjective that is used for the comparison of objects (usually to describing in a next degree) is a comparative adjective.

EXAMPLES

  • Food is hotter than the room’s temperature
  • The design is cooler than the studio one’s.

3. Superlative Degree of Adjectives

DEFINITION

  • Any adjective that is used to compare multiple objects (more than three) which is at an extreme extent (like most) is called as superlative adjective

EXAMPLE

  • This is the best food I’ve ever had.
  • This is the most coolest design that one can ever make.

 

Comparing the 3 Degrees using Sentence Examples

To understand the concept of degree of adjectives, Let us take a few sentences:

1. Sunil’s apple is sweet.
2. Kavita’s apple is sweeter than Sunil’s.
3. Sanjay’s apple is the sweetest of all.

In the first sentence, the Adjective sweet merely tells us that Sunil’s apple has the quality of sweetness, without saying how much of this quality it has.

In the second sentence, the Adjective sweeter tells us that Kavita’s apple, compared with Sunil’s, has more of the quality of sweetness.

And, in the third sentence, the Adjective sweetest tells us that of all these apples, Sanjay’s apple has the greatest amount or highest degree of the quality of sweetness.

Thus, we see that Adjectives change form (sweet, sweeter, sweetest) to show comparison. Therefore, They are called the three Degrees of Comparison.
