The Fulani, also called Peul or Fulbe, are predominantly Muslim peoples scattered throughout many parts of Africa, especially in West Africa from Lake Chad in the east to the Atlantic coast. They are concentrated in Nigeria, Mali, Guinea, Senegal and Niger but can also be found in several other countries. The Fulani language, also known as the Fula, is divided between the Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo language family.
The Fulani were originally a pastoral people, and their life and organization were governed by the needs of their herds.
