Sound is a very important part of our life as we wake up in the morning by hearing alarms, or the chirping of birds. Sound helps us to communicate with another person.
We talk and express ourselves by using sound and we hear and listen to others with the help of sound.
What is a Sound?
Sound is produced when something vibrates and sends vibrations to our ears. Vibration travels through the air or other material (solid, liquid or gas) in the ear. The stronger the vibration, the louder the sound, sounds get faint the further you get from the source.
How children are taught to know the Sound?
Often children are asked to close their eyes and listen to the sounds they hear in their neighborhood, or to play the same sound game to identify the sounds in which they listen to the different sounds and to identify what makes the sound.
Teachers discuss with students about the sound safety and precautions taken by wearing ear defenders. Similarly, children explore the pitch of the sound with loudness by using different musical instruments, for example drums, recorders, guitars. And further children may carry out investigations on their own to explore the distance the sound travels.
What are the types of sound?
There are two types of sound, Audible and Inaudible.
- Inaudible sounds are sounds that the human ear cannot detect.
- Sounds that are with low frequency (<20KHz) are called Infrasonic Sounds. Elephants use such infrasonic sounds to communicate with others who are 100s kms away.
- Sounds that are with high frequency (>20KHz) are called Ultrasonic Sounds. Dogs, Bats can hear high frequency sounds.
