Positive and Negative Sentences with Examples in English

Have you ever read any rules, regulations, or even do and don’ts in a certain place? The ‘do’ sentences in a rule show us advice about what we should do. This is the type of sentence that we can categorize as a positive sentence. 

On the other hand, the ‘don’t’ sentence points out something that we should not do, this one is an example of a negative sentence type. To know more about the negative and positive sentence, let’s get to the list.

What are Positive Sentences?

Positive Sentence is also known as an affirmative sentence is makes a type of sentence that makes a statement about something that is ‘so.

Characteristic features: 

  1. A positive sentence usually contains a statement that is a fact.
  2. This sentence also tells that something is so.
  3. The words ‘no’ either ‘not’ do not exist in a positive sentence.
  4. This sentence can be formed into various tenses, such as past, present, and future sentences. Whose sentence form will change with the addition of the following affixes:

Past        ?    did; was/were; had; would; could; etc.   

Present        ?    am; has/have; is/are (followed by the verb 1); verb-ing.

Future         ?    will (be); is/are going to.

What are Negative Sentences ?

Negative sentence is the type of sentence which rejects a statement in that sentence itself. Negative sentences are decisive articulations i.e they transfer data accepted to be valid.

Characteristic features: 

  1. A negative sentence shows us that the statement in the sentence itself is false. 
  2. The words ‘no’ and ‘not’ exist in this negative sentence.
  3. A sentence that tells you that something is not so. 
  4. The positive sentence can be formed into negative sentence by adding the word ‘not’ after the auxiliary (be), such as am, is, are, was, and were.
