In this section we’ll learn about meaning of noun and some sentence examples to show how nouns are used and how to identify them whenever you encounter one in a sentence.

What is a Noun ?

A Noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing.
For example : Ram, Albert, Delhi, America, pen, paper, book, soldier etc.

In a sentence, nouns can play the role of subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, object complement, appositive, or adjective. As this being an advance concept we’ll discuss it later.

Do you know that there are more nouns than any other kind of word, hence forming large proportion of English vocabulary.

How do you identify a Noun in Sentence ?

Noun is something that denotes person, animal, place or thing. Let us look at some nouns which fall under these categories and some examples to clear our understanding. We have italicized nouns in every sentence to easily identify them.

i. Person – Name of a person is a noun like Robert, Gaurav, Ekta, Charlie, Akshay etc.

  • John is working for us.
  • My mother loves me.

ii. Place – Name of a place is a noun like Delhi, Agra, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Italy, Mumbai etc. all are nouns.

  • Agra is famous for Taj Mahal.
  • The new restaurant is really good.
  • Mumbai is well known for it’s beaches.

iii. Thing – Name or type of thing like Badminton, Bag, Computer, Clock etc.

  • Please open the door.
  • That bag is really nice.
  • This computer is very fast.

iv. Animal – Name or type of animal like House, Lion, Elephant, Goat etc.

  • Elephants have sharp memory.
  • The dog barked at the boy.
