Receptive Bilingualism occurs when a person has sufficient exposure to language to have its native understanding of it, but, for some reason, cannot communicate with it.

One of the common misconceptions about bilingualism is that one cannot speak it at all. Bilingual people can speak this language, but they often get into trouble with grammar. The time of the action confuses them, and they often cannot think of the right moment while speaking. They may also find it difficult to speak the whole sentence because they cannot connect the words. After many unsuccessful attempts to speak, they may completely stop speaking the language and return to use monolinguals.

Multilingualism is the ability of each speaker or community of speakers to communicate effectively in three or more languages.
