Six English Language Proficiency Levels (A1,A2,B1,B2,C1,C2)

Introduction: You might be aware that each language has various levels of proficiency. This is the general international scale that contains different levels of language proficiency in ascending order.

  • Beginner
  • Elementary
  • Pre-Intermediate
  • Intermediate
  • Upper-Intermediate
  • Advanced Or Proficient Level

A1. Beginner Level

It is considered as the very first level of the language. In this stage, a person initiates the learning process and does not possess any practical knowledge of the language.

A2. Elementary Level

During the elementary stage, the person has gained some knowledge regarding the language. The person can frame sentences using various English phrases. For example, a person can write simple letters or a paragraph describing a book. In this stage, the vocabulary level is about 1200 – 1300 words.

B1. Pre-Intermediate Level

In this stage, the person gains basic knowledge of the grammar and can read simple textual content and get general meaning. The person has gained enough knowledge for writing formal as well as informal letters, and emails. 

B2. Intermediate Level

At this level, the person has already grasped good knowledge through the previous levels. The person has also gained sophisticated vocabulary that is about 2500 words. The person can easily construct sentences in English with correct grammar usage.  The person can fill out forms, read fictional books, English newspapers, and magazines. The person can also correspond with native speakers with ease

C1. Upper-Intermediate Level

In this stage, the vocabulary strength reaches up to 3000 – 4000 words. The person has accumulated good knowledge of grammar and pronunciation. They can form complex sentences and express their thoughts openly.

C2. Advanced Or Proficient Level

the person can observe improvement in the style and fluency of speaking the language. The person has already acquired a good communication level and can confidently make use of idioms, phrases, and proverbs. The vocabulary stage is about 4000 – 6000 words.
