8 Types of Word Classes in Grammar

English Grammar is a really vast subject. Each word class is very common and also has thousands of examples in it. The English language has 8 major word classes. So, here are the 8 types of word class in grammar:

1. Verbs

A verb is basically a word that indicates an action being performed. The most important part of a sentence is the verb. The English language has 16 basic verbs.

So, here are some examples of verbs with sentences

  • I am playing cricket
Here, ‘play’ is the action that is happening. Therefore, ‘play’ is the verb here.
  • I am eating food
  • I am watching TV

2. Nouns

A noun is the most basic part of a sentence. It is a word that identifies a place, person, or thing. It also has 2 main subtypes:

  • Common noun: Specifies a class or a group of something. For example, dog, cat, and lion. So, here is a sentence:
That is a cute dog but I am scared.
Here, ‘dog’ is a common noun.
  • Proper noun: A proper noun is a noun that specifies a certain entity, i.e. it is a particular name. For example, Mark, Robin, and Lisa. So, here is a sentence of a proper noun:
Mark and Robin are my good friends.
Here, ‘Mark’ and ‘Robin’ are names, i.e. proper nouns.

3. Adverbs

An adverb is the modification of a verb. It is generally used before a verb in a sentence. It is also considered a very essential part of a sentence. So, here are some examples of an adverb:

  • He is a fast runner
Here, fast is the adverb, as it modifies the verb ‘runner’.
  • He is a slow learner
  • She is an amazing dancer

4. Adjectives

Adjectives should not be confused with adverbs. They are used to modify nouns. Or in simpler words, an adjective is used to describe a person, a place, or a thing. So, here are a few examples of adjectives:

  • Linda is a beautiful girl
Here, beautiful is the adjective, which is modifying Linda, who is a girl.
  • I have a friendly dog
  • Raj is a smart boy

5. Pronouns

Pronouns are words that are used to represent nouns. Pronouns substitute nouns because putting nouns after every sentence is not possible. Pronouns thus come in use to take place of nouns. So, here are some examples:

  • Aakash is not well. Aakash won’t come to school.
The proper noun is in both of the sentences here. A better way to write this would be by using pronouns. Here is how:
  • Aakash is not well so he won’t come to school.
The use of the pronoun ‘he’ has made the sentence easier.

6. Prepositions

Prepositions connect a noun with a pronoun to make a meaningful sentence. Here are some examples:

  • I am coming with you
Here, ‘with’ is a preposition, connecting ‘I’ with ‘you’
  • He is hiding under the table
Here, ‘under’ is the preposition, connecting ‘he’ and the ‘table’, and ‘hiding’ is the verb

7. Conjunctions

Conjunctions are words that join two words or more. In other words, they glue two words. Here are a few examples of conjunctions.

  • I am eating a burger because I like it.
Here, ‘because’ is connecting the two parts of the sentences.
  • I like comics but I don’t like magazines.

8. Determiners

Determiners introduce nouns. The easiest determiners are articles (a, an, the). Here are some examples of determiners:

  • The food is kept outside
Here, ‘the’ is introducing the noun ‘food’
  • That is an animal
