CVCC Pattern Words List for Kindergarten Kids

The Abbreviated term CVCC stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant-Consonant type of words. It is a basic spelling pattern used in many English words.

CVCC words are basically learnt in phase four of the Letters and Sounds Phonics curriculum. In phase four, children as well learn longer words with more consonant sounds than what is briefed, such as CCCVC words (e.g. ‘s-p-l-a-sh’), CCVCC words (e.g. ‘c-r-u-s-t’) and CCCVCC words (e.g. ‘s-c-r-u-n-ch’).

This specific cvcc list is designed to encourage kids to learn segmentation. Segmentation is basically the breaking up of words into individual sounds and is covered in phase 4 phonics.

Teachers can help students learn and read CVCC words during targeted reading. Try to identify each sound in sequence and ask the children to name the sounds before ‘putting them together’ so that they can read the whole word.

Teachers can help children learn to write these words by asking them to ‘speak’ the word. By separating them into individual sounds, and writing each one in sequence they will find it easier to write the whole word.
