Before we move to French ordinal numbers we should know the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers.
- Cardinal number: Number that says the quantity of something there are. Eg : one apple, five oranges
- Ordinal number: Number that denotes the position of something.Eg:1st,2nd,3rd etc..
Rules of Forming Ordinal numbers
If you are the crazy fan of Tour de France and watch it with subtitles you will notice that” Eagan Bernal arrives premier; Geraint Thomas arrives deuxime”. When you learn ordinal numbers in French you will understand that “Eagan Bernal arrives First; Geraint Thomas arrives Second.”
How to make Ordinal numbers in French:
- just add -ieme to the cardinal number by replacing e at the end.
- In case of 5, you need to add a -u after cinq (cinq => cinquième).
- In case of 9, you have to change the -f into -v: neuf => neuvième.
- In case of 1 and 2 gender should be considered.
