Interactive writing is a collaborative way of teaching / learning where teacher and learners work together to compose and write texts. Not only do they share their decisions on what to write, they also share the work written by authors. The teacher uses participatory writing time to demonstrate reading and writing strategies as she engages children in creating texts.
Interactive writing allows teachers to teach children how to move from spoken to written language, teach children to be creative in their independent writing to know what to do when they don’t know how to write something and show the connections they see between knowledge of high frequency words into actual process of writing so they learn how to use the item knowledge.
There are 3 effective interactive teaching strategies to encourage and builds up the interest among the children.
1. Think, Pair and Share
Set a problem or question on a particular topic, and then pair your readers. Give each student enough time to reach a correct conclusion, and allow the children to share their conclusion with their voice. In this way your students will be involved, connected, and remember the class teaching more than ever.
2. Brainstorming
Interactive brainstorming is mostly done in group sessions. The process is useful for creating creative thoughts and ideas. Brainstorming helps students learn to work together, and above all, learn from each other. The children come up with great ideas that surprised us all.
3. Buzz session
Participants meet in session groups and ask to focus on a single topic. Within each group, each student contributes thoughts and ideas. Encourage discussion and collaboration between students in each group. Everyone should learn from each other’s insights and experiences. As a teacher, you can provide your students with specific words to stimulate conversation.
Of course, there are many other interactive teaching concepts which is defined in different categories as under:
- Individual student activities
- Student pair activities
- Student group activities
- Interactive game activities
