Theater Vocabulary Words for Drama and Acting

We have prepared a list of Technical vocabulary words for a beginner student who want to get into drama or acting. The tabular list is sorted alphabetically to help students get the new words in a proper sequence.

  1. Act: A group of scenes enacted forming a story
  2. Aisle: A passage that segregates areas in a theatre
  3. Apron: A part of the stage extending past the theater arc
  4. Arena: A theater without a proscenium
  5. Arena Stage: See theatre in the round
  6. Articulation: Process of starting and stopping vowel and consonant sounds
  7. Audible: Able to be heard
  8. Auditorium: The part of a theater where the audience sits and watches from
  9. Backstage: The area behind the stage in the theater, mainly where preparation takes place
  10. Blackout: When all the lights go off in a theater so that the audience focuses on the play
  11. Border: Drapes above the stage used for masking equipment
  12. Box Office: The place where tickets are bought for the play
  13. Call: The time when you are expected to come to the theater for practicing
  14. Cast: The people who are the part of the enactment in theater
  15. Casting: The process of selecting actors, dancers, etc. for a play
  16. Call Board: Place where announcements and notices for actors and crew are posted
  17. Cast: Actors in a play
  18. Casting: Selecting the actor who plays each role in a show
  19. Collaboration: The work of many people toward a common project; work done by many people.
  20. Comedy: Play that treats situations or characters in a humorous way; play with a happy ending.
  21. Company: Actors and crew of a production.
  22. Costumes: Clothing wore for a certain kind of a play
  23. Cue: A signal for carrying out an action at a time
  24. Dramaturgy: The art of writing and producing plays
  25. Dramatics: The art of writing and producing plays

  27. Dress: Put on clothes
  28. Dramatic Composition: A play for performance on the stage or television or in a movie etc.
  29. Dramatic Work: A play for performance on the stage or television or in a movie etc.
  30. Dialogue: A part of a conversational exchange between two people in a scene
  31. Downstage: The part of a stage closest to the audience
  32. Dramatic Pause: A small period of silence without any dialogue, just for a dramatic effect
  33. Dress Rehearsal: An enacting of the whole play before the performance with the costume
  34. Get-in: The process of moving everything into a theatre
  35. Grand Drape: Front curtain separating the stage from the audience, often simply called “the curtain.”
  36. Get-out: The process of moving everything out of a theatre
  37. Green Room: The room where actors wait before or after the enactment
  38. Interval: A break between a play or a movie
  39. Intermission: Short break between the acts of a play or parts of a performance.
  40. Lines: Pieces or sentences of dialogue.
  41. Matinee: Afternoon performance in the theatre
  42. Makeup: Cosmetics of various colors applied to the actor’s skin so that facial features are visible and/or altered under stage lighting.
  43. Mask: Hide from audience view.
  44. Preshow: Show that occurs before the main play
  45. Props: Objects used by actors for making the enactment realistic
  46. Proscenium: The part of a theatre which is in front of a curtain
  47. Playwright: Person who plans and writes plays
  48. Profile: Actor position facing the wings, left or right. Used for arguments or love scenes.
  49. Producer: Person who finds financial investors, hires the director and production staff, sets the budget, etc. For a play production.
  50. Play Script: A written version of a play or other dramatic composition
  51. Role: Part or character played by an actor
  52. Stage: The platform where actors perform
  53. Script: Something written by hand
  54. Theater: A building where performances can be presented
  55. Theatrical: Of or relating to the stage
  56. Theatrical Performance: A performance of a play
  57. Technical Director: Person in charge of everything back of the grand drape except the actors and costumes; answers to the stage manager
  58. Troupe: Group of actors, especially those that tour from place to place.
  59. Wardrobe: A piece of furniture that provides storage space for clothes
  60. Wardrobe:
  61. Wings: Backstage area on either side of the stage.
