1. Listening Vocabulary
You have developed a stock of words in your mind simply by listening to people. You can recognise a word from that stock the moment you hear it. This stock is your Listening Vocabulary. Also, you can still understand an unfamiliar word even if you don’t know its meaning beforehand. This happens because of signs like the speaker’s tone, gestures, words spoken before and after the unknown word, topic of discussion, etc.
Example: You can understand the words your teacher is using while explaining a topic in class.
2. Speaking Vocabulary
Speaking Vocabulary is a part of your Listening Vocabulary, comprising the words you speak while conversing. It plays a major role in shaping your impression because people notice your choice of words, even in small conversations.
Example: You use different words while in a conversation with someone.
3. Reading Vocabulary
If you know how to read well, then cheers on developing an efficient Reading Vocabulary. All the words you can understand while reading a text are part of your Reading Vocabulary. In fact, this is the largest type of vocabulary simply because while reading we get exposed to more and more new words.
Example: You can read this text and understand almost every word.
4. Writing Vocabulary
Many words are not so common in speech than they are in writing. All the words that come to your mind while writing are part of your Writing Vocabulary.
Example: You can write answers in your tests.
