There are a number of reasons why people do not get enough sleep:

  • You have trouble sleeping, such as shortness of breath, insomnia, or occasional joint movements that reduce the depth or cause frequent waking.
  • You have a health condition such as heart disease, lung or kidney disease, or chronic pain, which causes frequent waking.

If you continue to lack sleep, you will have a condition called insomnia. This is a situation where you can’t make up for the lost hours of sleep. Poor sleep increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and even premature death.
