4 Types of Questions with Examples in English

Just like the English language comprises of different types of sentences, it also has different types of questions. If we talk about the basic questions, then we can easily identify those sentences as they have a question mark in the end. It is one of the easiest ways to recognize the questions.

It also gives a brief idea of how questions are formed. But in this session, we would be discussing different types of questions in English grammar. Each type has its own rules which need to be followed.

Let’s check out different types of questions that can be used in English grammar.

This knowledge will help you to move on with the structures of forming these essential question types.

1. Yes/No Type Of Questions

These are considered to be the most basic types of questions. They can be used to get simple answers in the form of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. The most important point to remember is that they begin with a verb which includes auxiliary verbs (helping verbs). In the given sentence, these auxiliary words come before the main verb. Let’s explore some examples of these forms.

  • Is it going to rain today?
  • Is the book on the table?
  • Are you in the class?
  • Is the plane crashed?
  • Can he cook the food?

Sometimes the auxiliary words get eliminated hence the questions begin with ‘Do’, ‘Does’, ‘Did’.

  • Did Naina go to school yesterday?
  • Does Mohit play the violin in the class?
  • Do you know where is the King’s Cross station?

You need to be very careful with the tense of the sentence while framing the questions. With enough practice, you can turn the basic sentences into various questions.

2. ‘Wh’ Questions Forms

The ‘wh’ questions words are ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘when’, where’, and ‘why’. There are one more question words which are the part of the list – ‘How’.

  • The words ‘what’ – ‘which’ are used to ask about the things.
  • The word ‘where’ is used to ask about the location or place of something.
  • The word ‘who’ is used to ask about someone.
  • The word ‘when’ is used to ask about the time.
  • The word ‘why’ is used to ask about the reason for a specific thing.
  • Now the word ‘how’ can be used to represent the way in which things are happening or done.
Note: Make sure that you are exploring all the inversions while forming the indirect questions. In the Direct question, the verb comes before the subject whereas in the indirect question it is moved at the end.

Let’s explore the questions of each type.

  • What is your residential address?
  • What stream would you like to choose for higher studies?
  • What will you do in Canada?
  • Who is your classroom partner?
  • Who is take you to the park?
  • Who is your cousin?
  • Which is the best song for your wedding?
  • Where you would be working in New York?
  • Where is your hometown?
  • When will you prepare for your board exam?

3. Question Tags

While using a question tag you need to understand that it is used at the end of the sentence. Make sure that you understand this part correctly. Let’s explore the examples

  • I think the train will leave at 9 am in the morning, doesn’t it?
  • The house has been demolished by the government, isn’t it?
  • Maya would bring the cake for the party, won’t she?

Here, in the above examples, you can see that the question is asked to get the confirmation.

4. Indirect Questions – Polite English

We have always easily understood the direct questions but when it comes to indirect questions we need to be a bit polite. Direct questions may sound a bit blunt when you are trying to ask for help or favor. Let’s have a look at the examples.

  • Could you please work out the solution for me?
  • Do you know where is Maya’s house?
