3 Rules for Using Singular and Plural Verbs with Persons

We are very well aware of the word “verb” – It is a word use to represent some action or state. In English Grammar there can only be two types of verbs either singular or plural. We know that Singular verbs deal with singular subjects while plural verb deal with plural subjects.

Many people find it difficult to use these verbs at their right place and often mix them with different or wrong subjects. Therefore, In Today’s session we would be discussing some rules to help you learn how you should use different verb types correctly.

3 Rules to Which Singular or Plural Verb Must Agree

Following are three important rules we must remember to correctly use the singular and plural verbs with their use in example sentences.

1. The Verb must agree with its subject in Number and Person, i.e. the Verb must be of the same Number and Person as its subject.
For example,

  • I was there.
  • I am here.
  • I play badminton.
  • I have a racket.

2. If the subject is of the Singular Number, Third Person, then the Verb must be of the Singular Number,
First person.
For example,

  • He was there.
  • He plays badminton.
  • He is here.
  • He has a racket.

3. If the subject is of the Plural Number, Third Person, the Verb must be of the Plural Number, Third Person.
For example,

  • They are here.
  • They were there.
  • They plays badminton

The above mentioned examples should help you clearly distinguish between the use of singular and plural verbs.

From the above three points we have learned that for different persons we have different verbs according to subject if it singular or plural.

Thus we have a defined setting of Persons in both the Numbers (Singular and Plural) in the following way :
(in the Verb to be)

Singular Plural
First Person I am We are
Second Person You are You are
Third Person He/She/it is They are
