Dear Children
We are here with another Word Phonics, which will definitely add on to your interest, so what are we waiting for, let us begin:
Introducing, young children to the excitement and wonder of books requires the systematic teaching of sounds. Understanding sounds will also help children to know which letters to use when writing words.
Written language can be compared to code, so knowing the sounds of each letter and how those letters sound when combined will help children determine the words as they read.
The first -ough pronunciation has the sound “oh”, as in the word “go.” For example, you should let the dough rise before you put the bread in the oven. In this word there is a sound – “oh”.
The ‘ough’ grapheme is very different from the spelling of the / or / aw / phoneme. Words such as ‘ought, ‘nought, ‘bought’, and ‘thought are however widely used.
The grapheme ‘augh’ varies greatly in spelling and / or / aw / phoneme. Terms such as ‘taught’, ‘caught’ and ‘daughter’ are very widely used. Please note that there are some common spellings for all the words ‘aught’ (ought) and ‘naught’ (nought).
So, we understand from above that the grapheme “ough’ and ‘augh’ are very rare spelling variations of the / or/ aw/ phoneme. The word ‘ought’ has the same meaning as ‘aught’ and ‘nought’ has the same meaning as ‘naught’. It is more usual to see the ‘ought’ and ‘nought’ spellings. Whilst the ‘ough’ and ‘augh’ graphemes as code for / aw / are very rare.
