Before we get into all the different types of wood and their common uses, it is important to understand the three basic types of wood you may come across. The three types are: soft wood, hard wood, and engineered wood. Each of these different types of wood can be used in a variety of ways.

1. Softwoods

Softwoods are wood and planks cut from conifer trees. Conifer trees are present in any trees that have needles and that produce clusters. Examples of popular soft woods used in woodworking, construction, and furniture are Pine, Cedar, Fir, Spruce, and Redwood.

2. Hardwoods

Hard wood comes from any trees that do not produce needles or lumps. These trees are best known as evergreens. Hard wood is a tree that produces leaves and seeds.

Common types of hardwoods include oak, maple, cherry, mahogany and walnut.

3. Engineered Wood: Manufactured Wood Products

The third type of wood you can come across is engineered wood. Engineered wood does not occur naturally in nature but instead is made.

These boards are usually made of wood that is used to have certain qualities or features. Also known as composite wood, these products are usually made from sawdust.

Technically recycled wood is often treated chemically or by heat process to produce a wood product that can meet a certain size that may be difficult to reach in nature.

Popular examples of engineered woods include Plywood, Oriented Strand Board, Medium Density Fiber Board, and Composite Board. Wood veneers as well at times may be classified as engineered wood.
