Inappropriate Colloquialisms Examples in English

In English grammar, we have already studied about proverbs and idioms, this time we would be learning about Colloquialism. Basically a colloquialism is a word derived from Latin word colloquium that means conference or conversation. In the literal meaning, colloquialism refers to as informal or daily use language.

What is an Inappropriate Colloquialism?

Inappropriate colloquialism is a use of colloquial language in such a way that the listener or reader is not able to understand what is being said or written.

Colloquialisms with non-literal meanings are often misunderstood if the reader isn’t from a similar geographic area as you, because of difference in slang words used.

Using colloquialisms can be useful if you want to detract the reader from the serious effect to portray a relaxed image, but using colloquialisms in formal correspondence could be viewed as unprofessional or inappropriate. Because using Informal language can make you seem imprecise in your work and would give a poor first impression.

Colloquialisms aren’t appropriate in most forms of writing especially when trying to convey an educated message, but try to avoid using them in following scenarios:

  • Interviews
  • Academic writing
  • Job applications
  • Report Writing
  • Article Writing
  • Serious Educational Content
