10 Basic English Grammar Rules for Kids

Let’s discuss some of the basic grammar rules of English which you can easily teach to you kids. So just roll up your sleeves and get started!

1. The Subject of the sentence is very essential: The subject can be a person, a place, animal, thing or idea. Without the use of proper subject, the sentence does not seem to be complete. 

2. The sentence predicate generally expresses the action: A predicate of the sentence is used to express the action of the subject. 

3. Every sentence needs a proper structure: It is one of the most basic English grammar rules. The structure specifies the proper organization of the nouns, verbs, subject, and predicate of the sentence.

  • A singular subject needs a singular predicate.
  • A sentence needs to express a complete thought.

4. The Independent clause must always have a subject and predicate: Independent clause all-important aspect to make it sound complete. It cannot only be a phrase. If anyone of the thing is missing then it would become a dependent clause.

5. A Sentence has multiple parts of speech: It is a true fact that a sentence is filled with many different parts of speech. Basically, a sentence would follow up two structures:

  • Subject + Predicate
  • Subject + Verb + Direct Object

Different types of sentences follow different sentence structure:

  • Declarative Sentences
  • Interrogative Sentences
  • Exclamatory Sentences
  • Imperative Sentences

6. In a sentence, direct objects are information providers: Generally, when the direct objects are getting involved, they tend to provide more information about the verb.

7. Indirect objects easily work with direct objects: Technically, the indirect objects are receivers of the direct object in a sentence. 

8. Capitalization is very essential in each and every sentence: In English, every sentence must start with a capital letter. All the titles, names of books, person, animal, places, movies must start with a capital letter. This is considered to be the standard format of framing a grammatically correct sentence.

9. Importance of punctuation mark to terminate the sentence: In English, sentences must have proper termination with the help of punctuation marks to show the end of it.

10. Use of colon to indicate sentence separation: Basically, colons are applicable to show the sentence separation by introducing long, direct quotes with two clauses.
