Family Members Vocabulary Words List

Family is important to every one of us and we all love our family isn’t it. Wherever we go or move in this world and whatever we may achieve, our heart and soul will always be in our home because it is where our family is. Nothing in this world can be stronger than the bonding and attraction of the blood. The family is an essential god gift which plays a most crucial role in every individual’s life.

Family Members:

 Mostly every family consists of :

  • A Grandfather.
  • A grandmother.
  • A mother (who gives birth to you).
  • A father.
  • Siblings (brothers and sisters) and 
  • Yourself. 

Grandfather is used for both, the father of your father and father of your mother. Similarly we call mother of our mother and mother of our father grandmother. 

Types of Family Members:

There are two types of family member;

  1. Immediate family members 
  2. extended family members. 

The immediate family members

They include our parents, siblings, children, grandparents (grandfather and grandmother), mother-in-law, father-in-law, spouse and grandchild. 

Extended family members 

They include your relatives for example aunt’s uncles and cousins. 

Types of families

Nuclear family and step family are two types of families. A nuclear family is a family where father, mother and their children live in one household. stepfamily is a family unit in which one or both adult partners have children from a previous relationship. Stepfamilies can be formed after a divorce or death of a parent. Step family includes step mother or a step father, step brother and step sister.  

Who is a cousin?

Cousin is a child of your aunt or an uncle. If the cousin is a boy he may be referred as cousin brother and if the cousin is a girl, she can be called as cousin sister. There are first cousins who share common grandparent, second cousins who share common great grandparent and third cousins who share common great-great grandparent. Distant relatives are the third cousins with whom you have very little connection. Blood relatives mean with whom you are related through birth for example your mother and siblings. 

Descendants and Ancestors

Descendants – a person who is related to you and who lives after you, such as your child or grandchild, and all future generations. Ancestors – family members from past generations. 

Adoption

Adoption is the process or fact of legally taking another’s child and bringing it up as one’s own. They can also be called as foster parents. Foster means to take care. Adoptive father and adoptive mother are the people who have adopted a child and are not his/her biological parents. 

Other family members

Brother-in-law is the brother of one’s wife or husband. Sister-in-law is the sister of one’s wife or husband. You become wife and husband after marriage. The girl is called the wife and boy is the husband. Mother of both wife and husband is known as mother-in-law and father of both is known as father-in-law.Grandson and granddaughter (grandchildren) are the children of your children. Further great-grandson or great-granddaughter are the children of grandchildren. Nephew is the  son of one’s brother or sister, or of one’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law and niece is the daughter of one’s brother or sister, or of one’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law.To list all your family members, a family tree is used. Orphan is person who does not have a mother or father, they have died. When a father or a mother of a child dies, the property of the child’s parents is equally distributed among the child and its siblings. This is called inheritance. Every religion and country has its own inheritance laws.
