What are Homonyms?
The –onym root means “name.” Homonyms are words that have the same name – they sound the same and they’re spelled the same.
For example, Bat meaning an object used to hit a ball, and Bat meaning a a nocturnal flying mammal, are homonyms. They have the same pronunciation, “Bat,” and they’re both spelled B-A-T. To put it in an strict sense, homonyms are both homophones and homographs!

1. Accent
- In the word ‘dinner’ the accent(noun) is on the first syllable.
- The women accent(verb) their eyes with makeup.
Thus, the first accent is used as a noun which means tone of a voice, similarly we see it clearly the second one is a verb meaning stress or emphasis.
2. Stress
- People are under a lot of stress(noun), since they feel they are unheard.
- Lately my teacher is stressing(verb) way too much on digital detox, for better grades.
Since, in both the examples the first stress is a noun meaning tension or pressure. The later is a noun meaning to give particular emphasize on something.
3. Desert
- This area of the country is mostly desert(noun)
- The village was deserted(verb)
In particular, the first desert is a noun which is a form of dry landmass with little or no vegetation, the second one is a verb meaning to abandon.
4. Duck

The first is a bird and the later is verb meaning to bend.
